Medicare Star Rating
April 29, 2020
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT INACCURACY IN OUR APRIL 2020 MEDICARE/MEDICAID "STAR" RATINGS
Cedar Ridge Health and Rehab Center just received a significant downgrade in our quarterly Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) "star ratings," where nursing facilities are ranked in certain categories from one to five stars.
I would like to assure you this downgrade is due purely to a clerical error one of our contractors made when entering our ID number in the CMS system, and NOT due to actual inadequate staffing!
What Happened: Specifically, one of our payroll contractors entered an incorrect facility number on the CMS's computerized reporting database, in a category that measures our staffing levels. This error was made in what is called the "Payroll-Based Journal" (PBJ) data, which is a way CMS ensures nursing care centers have an adequate number of staff working in a given quarter. In other words, PBJ data tells CMS how many employees were working in a three-month period.
What This Means: Due to simply using the wrong ID number for staffing levels at Cedar Ridge Health and Rehab Center, CMS's computer system automatically read our information as essentially very little staff were working. That is incorrect!
Unfortunately – and especially so in this era of the COVID-19 pandemic – our strong staffing levels were not provided to CMS. To be clear, we have had appropriate levels throughout the COVID-19 challenges. However, between now and late July 2020, both our CMS "Overall" and "Staffing" ratings – based on five stars – will appear as much lower than they would be if not for this clerical error.
When The Numbers Will Be Corrected: The next CMS "star ratings" will be released in late July 2020. We will have correct numbers reported then, which most assuredly will show a significant improvement in both our overall CMS star level, as well as staffing star level.
You are welcome to contact me with any questions you have, or seek reassurance about our very strong staffing levels. My number is 618.537.6165.
